Making A Fuss

Jan 16

I feel peculiar. I feel good, but it’s peculiar for me to feel good. I’m not used to it. I’m not very skilled at handling it. It’s rather like meeting a fawn in the woods. It’s beautiful, and you want to keep looking, but you know that at any moment it could run off, and you’ll never see it again. Like holding a soap bubble in your hand. Afraid to move because it might make this wonderful thing go away.

I don’t know if when I wake up tomorrow I’m going to keep on feeling good, or if I will revert to my baseline state of distracted frustration. I suppose we shall see.

Internet Vacation

As of now I am starting an Internet Vacation. That’s a vacation from the internet, not a vacation on the internet.

The amazing Wallace Shawn is interviewed in the A.V. club this week. Unfortuneatley, he doesn’t have much to say about one of his most well-known roles, Vizzini (aka the “Inconcieveable!” guy) from The Princess Bride — he even goes so far as to admit the film was “not [his] type of humor.” On the other hand, he expresses surprisingly great pride in Mr. Hall, the stern, geeky teacher from 1995’s Clueless, calling him “a very beautiful character to play.” He then goes on to describe a what may be the most dramatic off-screen debate in the 3-season history of the Clueless TV spinoff (for which Mr. Shawn reprised his film role):
“After about 10 episodes, they changed writers and brought in a different team of directors. And there was a guy who asked me to do something as Mr. Hall that I didn’t think was very appropriate for Mr. Hall. And I was prepared to be fired and sued rather than besmirch the character of Mr. Hall.”

Wallace Shawn is easily one of my favorite people, and I highly recommend considering him to be one of yours.

If you only focus on the headline, this reads like the coolest Black Op’s conspiracy exposé ever.
Oh shiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Making Video Games

I have always been interested in video game design. Often I’ve been playing a game and noted what I would do differently, or a feature that I would like to see more prevalently. Last week I read the Wikipedia article on video game design.

The article mentions the program Game Maker. It sounded solid, so I decided to check it out. I like it. It’s easy for a novice like me to use, but I understand that it will offer a more in-depth interface later on when I develop chops.

I know enough about programming to know that I’m eventually going to have to graduate to learning real languages and writing code, but for now I have some resources that work for me at my level.

The website has tutorials on how to make a few different types of games. I’ve already finished a simple but very satisfying game where a cat pops up and you click on it. I think my nephew will like it; he likes cats. I am currently working on a basic maze game.

Giant Isopod Replaces Fish's Tongue -

Don’t click this unless you want to see it. It’s gross. I don’t mind too much, since I love parasites (because I am a giant nerd), but some people’s delicate fancy baby sensibilities might get hurt if they ever see a bug ever.

I giant isopod is basically a rolly-polly, but in larger version than your puny mortal mind can comprehend. Or something.

Prozac

Over the years, I have been prescribed a number of SSRIs in the treatment of my Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Over half a dozen. None of them have worked. The last one made my psoriasis flare up something awful. So it’s understandable that after that, I would want to wait a bit before starting on a new one. I did just that, and after about a year and a half decided it was time. This was about two months ago.

My psychiatrist wrote me a prescription for Fluoxetine, the generic form of Prozac. I started out at 20mg per day. SSRIs usually take about two weeks to kick in, and in that amount of time I had found to my astonishment that the meds were working.

Not too much, mind you, as I was taking a low dose. But it was enough to grab my attention. After a month I went back to the doctor so he could evaluate my progress. That day he raised my dose to 40mg. It’s been about a month since then. I feel pretty good. Not great, but I can do more now.

We are VERY disappointed in you, Light Yagami

I am watching Death Note for the first time. Someone just died. If you have seen Death Note, then I think you know to whom I am referring. If you have not seen it, then I don’t want to spoil it for you.

Needless to say, I am VERY disappointed in a young man named Light Yagami. That boy only wanted your friendship, Light!
